    Baby Cakes

A few weeks back, I was on a late night call with a friend when I came across a local news story on KRQE’s website that literally made me sick to my stomach. The story was about a 6-week old puppy that had been badly burned and left for dead on the side of a road in Albuquerque. The picture posted on the site, which is on the left hand side of the picture above, really got to me & I couldn’t seem to get it shake it from my thoughts for the remainder of my restless night.

The following morning, I showed the article to my parents, which as many of you know are animal lovers. Upon seeing the photo, my mother decided she’d begin work on a blanket for “Baby Cakes” to have while she was recovering at Animal Humane in Albuquerque. Along with the blanket, she planned to collect monetary donations with the assistance of her second grade class at Agua Fria Elementary.

I was in for a surprise when my father picked me up from the airport this evening. During the week I was in Florida on vacation, not only did my mother finish knitting the puppy’s blanket, she & her students followed through with their plans and managed to collect over $120 dollars in donations. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the pink blanket & pickle jar full of money.

“Baby Cakes” was in the clinic when we arrived, but the staff quickly retrieved her after seeing the effort my mom & her students had put into making their donation. The puppy was in better shape then I had expected, but was rightfully timid, which of course made me extremely sad. No animal should have to experience that kind of torture at any point in their life, but a 6-week old puppy is especially helpless, and that’s what bothers me the most about this tragic incident. After spending several minutes with her, she eventually warmed up to us & began playfully biting my dad’s finger.

Although I am still extremely saddened & angered by the events that took place so early in this puppy’s life, the fact that she still has the tell tale signs of an animal who is still capable of trust & unconditional love is both heart warming and humbling. One can only hope that she ends up in a loving home where she will be pampered for the rest of her days.
